A lot of people this side of Africa think that going to a spa is more of a luxury than a necessity. I beg to differ; the “spa experience” is becoming “more accessible than ever” according to Lynne McNees the president, International Spa Association. Spas help us to manage stress and take that much needed time out to disconnect from the craziness of our environment and recharge our empty batteries.
Despite the pluses going to the spa give us, these days people are looking for much more than the basic pampering. The need to learn how to take better care of themselves provides an all-pronged approach to better health.
To have an idea of how things are changing in the spa industry worldwide, here are a few trends that are coming up strong in the pursuit of health and wellness this year 2015:
Wellness and preventive treatments
Spa enthusiasts will continue to focus on wellness and the treatments that will help them support good health and well-being as time progresses. These could be treatments designed to protect the skin and hair from environmental damage, wellness massage packages.
A lot of spas were expanding their menus trying to cater to everybody, however the trend now is to offer convenience and affordability by setting up niche spots that cater to a particular treatment; be it massages, feet, hair, brows or lashes.
Personal or customized treatments
Everybody loves the idea of having a couture treatment prepared just for them. There will obviously be a continued growth in these form of treatments and services that have a customization aspect to them. Whether it is picking the essential oils to be used in a massage, or choosing the focus of a facial, everyone loves to feel like the treatment they are receiving has been thoughtfully picked and unique just for them.
Treatments for men
Men are a huge and potential demographic who are becoming more aware of the value of taking better care of themselves and spas are sitting up and taking notes. So far we have already seen this trend become more obvious in the Nigerian landscape especially in the big cities where men apart from looking for treatments that help with stress and pain relief they also indulge in the couples’ massage packages provided by such spas. From high-end barber services to facials and massage, the demand for treatments designed for men will continue to grow.
Spa detox programs
Face it – despite our best efforts, sometimes we don’t eat as well as we should, breathe as much as we think we are or de-stress when we’re not in yoga. Spa detox programs try to remove environmental and dietary toxins from the body in order to promote health. People who detox at spas generally lose weight, gain energy, and become calmer. But not all detox programs are alike, so it’s important to do your research on spas that offer detox programs and the kind of detox programs they have to make sure you get into the right detox program for you.
